Ocean Petal Studio began with a simple belief: that comfort and meaning belong in the things we surround ourselves with. Comfort is no longer a luxury or an afterthought. It is, in fact, vital to our well-being.

I am Nancy—a southern designer, caregiver, and night owl. My studio and this story began several years ago when I became my mom’s primary caregiver.

If you had told either of us fifty years ago that I would step into this role, we both would have vehemently disagreed with you. Growing up, my mom and I were at constant odds. We could argue about what color blue the sky was. I knew she loved me, but I also knew she didn't quite like me. I don’t think I was the daughter she had pictured.

In high school, she was magnetic, popular, and on the homecoming queen court. I was none of those things. I preferred a few deep friendships, and homecoming queen was never in the cards for me. As the years passed, the rift between us widened until we were barely talking or seeing each other at all.

Then, a few years ago, her arthritis pain began to worsen. She was living with my brother, but between managing his company and the increasing demands of her care, it became clear she needed more help. Because I work from home and could be there around the clock, it was agreed that I would step in.

Given our history, I honestly wasn’t sure how it would go. I don't think she was either. But it didn't matter—she is my mom, and that was that.

What happened next surprised us both. Over the years, we have come to truly know each other—something we had never done before. Now, I can honestly say I have become her best friend, and she has become mine. There is nowhere on this earth I would rather be.

Her condition continues to worsen, and caring for her grows more difficult, more exhausting, and more emotionally complex. I cannot take away her pain. But what I can do is find ways to bring her comfort. And bring myself comfort, too.

Comfort comes in many forms. I focus on sensory comfort: sight, touch, and scent. These are the quiet, grounding things that remind us we are safe. Ocean Petal Studio is my way of sharing that comfort forward.

The number of family caregivers is growing every day. With that role comes fulfillment and gratitude, but also burnout, self-neglect, and exhaustion. Comfort plays a vital role in surviving all of it.
